On Tuesday, 19 August 2025, Durban made history as Deputy Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ms. Nomalungelo Gina, unveiled IRIS, South Africa’s first AI-powered teaching robot.
Created by Thandoh Gumede, a talented young entrepreneur from KwaZulu-Natal and founder of BSG Technologies, IRIS is designed to tutor learners from Grade R through tertiary level, covering all subjects in 11 of South Africa’s official languages.
During the launch, attendees witnessed a live demonstration of IRIS, showcasing its ability to provide personalized learning experiences, interactive lessons, and real-time feedback. The robot aims to empower every child, regardless of their background, ensuring access to quality education.
The event took place at the Durban Royal Golf Club, where the excitement around how AI can close educational gaps and transform classrooms across the country was palpable.
