The Role of Traditional Healers in Community Life: Past and Present - Beads Magazine
Fri. Jan 23rd, 2026

For generations, traditional healers—known as izangoma or izinyanga in Zulu culture—have been central to community life. They have long served as doctors, spiritual guides, and custodians of cultural wisdom, ensuring that both body and spirit remain in harmony.
Traditional Healers in the Past
In the past, traditional healers were the first and often only source of care. Communities relied on them for herbal remedies, spiritual protection, and advice on family and community disputes. Their deep knowledge of indigenous plants and rituals was handed down through oral tradition, making them trusted figures of authority. They also acted as spiritual mediators, connecting the living with their ancestors through ceremonies and divination. Beyond curing illness, they offered hope, guidance, and stability in uncertain times.
Traditional Healers in the Present
Today, traditional healers are still highly respected, even as modern medicine is more accessible. Many people consult both a clinic and a healer, showing the trust placed in this dual system of care. Healers continue to address issues often overlooked in hospitals, such as infertility, cleansing rituals, and misfortune believed to be linked to spiritual causes.
Their role is now formally recognized under South Africa’s Traditional Health Practitioners Act, which acknowledges them as legitimate contributors to the health sector. This recognition highlights their holistic approach—treating not only physical symptoms but also emotional and spiritual well-being.
A Living Heritage
Traditional healers embody more than medicine; they safeguard identity. Their practices remind communities of their connection to ancestors and heritage. As one elder healer explained, “We heal the body, but we also heal the spirit. Without both, a person is not whole.”
A Zulu proverb says, “Umuntu akalahlwa”—a person is never beyond redemption. This captures the essence of traditional healing: no matter the struggle, there is always a path back to balance and wellness
Past and present, traditional healers remain pillars of community life. They preserve culture, provide hope, and ensure that healing goes beyond science—embracing the spirit that makes us human.
