Richards Bay community members, families, learners, and local organisations gathered
for the 20th annual Zululand Observer Walk Away from Drugs event on 5 September
2026 at the Zululand Yacht Club in Richards Bay.The five-kilometre walk was organised
in partnership between the Zululand Observer and SANCA Zululand under the theme
Every Step Counts. The event was aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drug
and alcohol abuse and promoting healthier lifestyle choices.
The 20th anniversary marks two decades of community action against substance abuse
in Richards Bay. The continued staging of the event highlights that substance abuse is
still a challenge that requires ongoing education, prevention, and support. SANCA
Zululand used the platform to share information about its counselling and support
services for individuals and families affected by addiction. The organisation
emphasised that seeking help is an important part of recovery and that early
intervention can prevent further harm. The effects of substance abuse were discussed
during the event. Beyond the individual, families often face emotional and financial
difficulties, while young people may experience challenges at school and in their
relationships. Communities can also be affected by related social issues such as crime
and unemployment.
The involvement of young people was identified as a key focus. Organisers said
providing accurate information about the risks of drugs and alcohol, together with
access to positive activities and supportive adults, can help children and teenagers
make informed decisions. Wellness was presented as including physical, mental and
emotional health. Walking was highlighted as a simple and accessible form of physical
activity that encourages wellbeing while creating opportunities for community members
to connect and build a sense of belonging.
