More Than a Career: Dr. Nkululeko “Dr. Better” Mhlongo - Beads Magazine
Tue. Mar 10th, 2026

From Vryheid to national impact, Dr. Nkululeko Benedict Mhlongo—affectionately known as Dr. Better—is more than a psychologist. He’s a voice for healing, a champion for mental wellness, and a reminder that purpose can grow from humble beginnings.

Raised by his mother, Thembi Mdletshe, and surrounded by three sisters, Dr. Mhlongo grew up in a home filled with love, wisdom, and resilience. Those early lessons in compassion and community still guide his work today, as a therapist and a father. “My foundation came from being seen and loved. That’s what I try to give others in therapy—presence, not perfection.”

His academic path began at the University of Johannesburg, where he made the Dean’s List for Academic Excellence. He went on to complete his Honours and Master’s degrees at Wits. During his clinical internship at the University of Pretoria, he helped students navigate personal struggles with such warmth and care that they began calling him Dr. Better—a name that’s stayed with him ever since.

In 2019, he began using his voice beyond the therapy room—appearing in interviews and on media platforms to normalize mental health conversations. “Mental wellness should be as easy to talk about as a headache,” he says. “It’s not a sign of weakness to ask for help—it’s a sign of strength.”

His work includes running workshops and outreach programs where people can safely explore their mental health. He believes deeply in opening doors where silence once lived, especially in communities where therapy has long been seen as taboo.

Currently writing a book, Dr. Mhlongo hopes to reach those who may never sit on a therapist’s couch. “Not everyone will come to therapy, so I’m taking therapy to them—through words, through truth, through presence.”

He leads with vulnerability and authenticity, encouraging others to do the same. For him, it’s not about being perfect—it’s about showing up with honesty and care. “Healing is messy, but it’s worth it. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to start.”

Dr. Better is proof that no matter where you come from, you can change lives. With heart, purpose, and passion, he continues to be a light for others—one conversation at a time.
