Men aged between 26 and 40 are the demographic group most likely to suffer burns, according to statistics from Netcare, the largest private hospital network in South Africa. The release of the data coincides with National Burns Awareness Week, which runs from 6 to 12 May. National Burns Week is an opportunity to increase awareness about fire and provide safety precautions. Here are some precautions to take to avoid being a statistic
1. Be careful of heat sources: Never leave your stove tops, ovens, or cooking areas unattended.
2. Never neglect maintenance: Make sure your electrical appliances or plugs are in good condition.
3. Mask electrical outlets: Inspect electrical appliances and cover them. Illegal electrical connectivity or unsafe electrical wiring can cause an electrical fire.
4. Be safe if you smoke: Maintain a safe distance from flammable objects. Be aware of your surroundings and make sure there are no combustible materials.
5. Educate yourself and others. Know more about burn prevention and first aid burn. Spread awareness to friends, family, and community members.
