South African Fashion Week SS25 Recap: Top Trends and Takeaways - Beads Magazine
Fri. Jan 23rd, 2026

South African Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2025 wasn’t just about clothes it was a stage for storytelling, identity, and bold cultural statements. From futuristic couture to deeply personal collections, designers used the runway to explore memory, spirituality, sustainability, and heritage.
Gert-Johan Coetzee pushed the boundaries with his collection The Arrival: Where Ancestry Meets the Unknown. Metallic gowns, cosmic prints, and sculptural coats transformed the runway into a futuristic dreamscape, all while nodding to ancestral roots.
“Even when we feel like we’ve drifted too far, our roots remain within us,” Coetzee said of his inspiration. This fusion of past and future signaled a key SAFW trend: heritage reimagined through bold, experimental design.
Hangwani Nengovhela’s Rubicon offered a masterclass in elegance with her Ethereal Continuum collection. Flowing fabrics in neutral palettes gave her pieces a weightless quality—timeless yet distinctly modern.
“We wanted to create something that feels boundless yet deeply rooted, light yet powerful,” Nengovhela explained.
This emphasis on fluid silhouettes and airy textures emerged as a broader SAFW takeaway—clothing designed for freedom, grace, and ease.
Collections like MyRoots and SIXX6 brought South African traditions to the runway. MyRoots reworked denim into Tswana inspired silhouettes, while SIXX6’s Impepho explored Xhosa spiritual practices.
“Impepho is more than a plant it’s how we speak to our ancestors. Every design is a prayer, a conversation between body and spirit,” SIXX6 shared.
Cultural heritage wasn’t presented as nostalgia it was shown as living, evolving, and deeply stylish
Some of the most moving collections came from designers who mined their personal histories. Other designers used their collections to confront social and emotional struggles.
Naked Ape by Shaldon Kopman closed the week with rust-dyed fabrics reflecting burnout and renewal.
Heritage in Motion: Designers balanced tradition with futuristic experimentation.
Ease & Elegance: Fluidity, lightness, and natural textures dominated.
Personal Stories: Fashion became a canvas for memory, healing, and identity.
Resistance & Renewal: Many designers used design to confront challenges from burnout to cultural erasure.
This season proved that South African fashion is more than trend it’s testimony. By blending heritage with innovation, and by turning personal and cultural stories into wearable art, SAFW SS25 showed the world why local fashion is both relevant and revolutionary.
