Goat farming is gaining momentum as a sustainable and profitable agricultural pursuit, particularly in rural areas. For Sphiwe Tembe, a passionate goat farmer and seller, this practice is more than a livelihood—it’s a calling. Based in a rural community of Mbazwana, Sphiwe has built a thriving business while inspiring others to consider the benefits of goat farming.
“Goats are highly adaptable animals,” says Sphiwe. “They flourish in natural grazing environments, so you don’t have to invest heavily in commercial feed. With access to good grazing land, they’re an excellent choice for small-scale farmers.”
One of the most attractive aspects of goat farming is the animals’ breeding potential. “Goats are prolific,” explains Sphiwe. “A healthy doe can produce at least two kids annually, and under ideal conditions, even up to six. This makes them perfect for quickly expanding your herd.”
However, Sphiwe emphasizes that successful goat farming demands careful attention to nutrition. “While goats enjoy maize, overfeeding it can lead to bloating, which is dangerous. A balanced diet with ample roughage and clean water is essential to maintaining a healthy herd,” he advises.
Health management is another cornerstone of effective goat farming. “Regular monitoring, vaccinations, and prompt treatment are critical,” Sphiwe says. “If a goat shows signs of illness, isolate it immediately to prevent diseases from spreading to the rest of the herd.”
Ticks pose one of the greatest challenges for goat farmers. “They’re a serious threat because they spread heartwater disease, a leading cause of death among goats,” Sphiwe explains. “Dipping and spraying are non-negotiable. Yes, it’s an additional expense, but it’s crucial for success.”
Despite these hurdles, Sphiwe is unwavering in his belief in the rewards of goat farming. “This venture has transformed my life,” he shares. “It’s not just about the income. It’s about building something sustainable and contributing to food security in the community. There’s immense satisfaction in knowing your work makes a difference.”
For those aspiring to follow in his footsteps, Sphiwe offers straightforward advice: “Stay vigilant. Monitor your herd closely, manage pests effectively, and always be open to learning. The challenges are real, but the rewards are even greater if you’re committed.”
