Everyone knows someone who makes amazing cakes, sews beautiful dresses, or does perfect nails — but you can’t remember the name of their business. In a market this crowded, people don’t just buy what you sell. They buy who they trust and remember.
That’s branding. And no, it’s not just a pretty logo.
Seth Godin said it best: a brand is “a set of expectations, memories, stories and relationships.” It’s not what you say about your business. It’s what customers think of when they hear your name.
So how does a small business actually become memorable?
1. Know exactly who you’re for.
You can’t be for everyone. A clothing shop for young professionals shouldn’t try to sound like it’s for everyone from teenagers to grandmothers.
Pick your person. What do they need? What do they worry about? What makes them choose you? When you know that, everything — your captions, your prices, your packaging — gets sharper.
2. Look the same everywhere.
People trust what they recognize. If your logo is pink on Instagram, blue on Facebook, and your WhatsApp profile is still a personal selfie, you look scattered.
Use the same name, same colours, same tone of voice. Whether it’s on your packaging, your price list, or how you reply to a DM, keep it consistent. Familiarity builds trust.
3. Deliver more than your advert.
A nice flyer might get someone to try you once. What brings them back is how you made them feel.
Did you deliver on time? Were you honest when something went wrong? Did you handle a complaint without attitude? That experience is your brand. And happy customers become your free marketing team.
You don’t need a big budget for this. You already have the tools — WhatsApp Business, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok. Show your work, share real reviews, answer comments like a human, team up with other local businesses. Be visible, be helpful, be consistent.
And lastly, find your edge.
Why you and not the shop next door? Is it that you make everything by hand? That you’re more affordable? Faster? More personal? You don’t have to be the best at everything, you just have to be clear about what you’re best at.
A recognisable brand doesn’t happen overnight. It happens every time someone interacts with you and thinks, “Yeah, I like how they do things.”
Stack enough of those moments, and your small business stops being just a small business. It becomes the one people remember and recommend.
