The Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) Special Economic Zone recently hosted an insightful visit from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) Deputy Minister, Mr. Z. Godlimpi, marking his first interaction with the Zone. The Deputy Minister’s visit focused on assessing ongoing development, particularly spotlighting two major multi-billion-rand projects: Nyanza Light Metals in Phase 1F and Wilmar Processing SA in Phase 1A.
The visit was led by RBIDZ CEO Thabane Zulu, who was joined by RBIDZ Board Member Elphas Mbatha, RBIDZ Business Development Executive Simthembile Mapu, and key leaders from the Nyanza Light Metals team, including CEO Donovan Chimhandamba and COO Rob Mhishi. The group provided comprehensive updates on several strategic projects, with a strong emphasis on the SEZ’s primary initiatives, including a new energy project.
In his address, Deputy Minister Godlimpi commended the teamwork and dedication behind the projects, applauding the leadership for its role in driving these initiatives forward. He emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships and harnessing international expertise while building local capacity. “We must foster strong partnerships and leverage international expertise, bringing those skills home to drive our growth. Access to capital funding will add further value and profitability,” said Godlimpi.
To gain an in-depth understanding of the projects, the delegation toured the Nyanza Product Testing and Development Centre, explored the construction-ready commercial plant site, and concluded with a walkthrough of the Wilmar Processing plant, set for commissioning in December 2024.
