Civil law refers to the substantive law that governs relationships between individuals, organizations, and entities. It deals with rights and obligations related to contracts, torts, property, family law, and other areas. It focuses on the substance of the law, including legal principles, rules and remedies. Civil law is very important in society as it plays a vital in maintaining social harmony, promoting responsible behaviour, supporting economic growth, and protecting individual rights making it a fundamental component of a functioning society. It also resolves things like property disputes and contracts.
Types of civil law:
- Contract law: breach of contract and contract interpretation
- Tort law: personal injury, negligence and liability
- Property law: real estate and intellectual property
- Family law: divorce, child custody and child support
“Civil law is the set of laws which includes the private affairs of citizens such as military, marriage, property, and criminal law. Civil law can affect individuals in various ways depending on the type of case they are facing. Some can get away with serious charges like murder whereas others can face jail time for something they did not do” says Nodicah Fundama.
