Buying VS Renting Tertiary Textbooks

By admin May7,2024

Most college students don’t like talking about the issue of textbooks because they cost a lot and sometimes their professors don’t even use them. Students often pay over R12000 every year for books! Renting books can be cheaper, but it might not always be the best idea.

Buying Your Books

When you buy textbooks, you can choose to get them new or used. If saving money is important, pick a used one – it should still be good enough even if there are some notes on the pages. If that makes it hard for you to read, go with a newer book instead.

Sometimes you have to buy a new book for school. This might happen if the book comes with extra things like a CD or workbook. If possible, ask someone who took the class before if buying an older version of the book is okay. You can also email your professor and ask if it’s alright to use a used one instead of brand-new. Just make sure that whatever copy you get has everything you need in it!

When you finish the semester, you can sell your books to the campus bookstore. Usually, they won’t give you a lot of money back for them. For example, a book that cost R750 might only get sold for R200 later on. But don’t forget – it’s up to you whether or not to keep the book as reference material or try selling it online since it belongs to you now!

Renting Your Books

If you want to save money, renting textbooks is cheaper than buying them. You can rent books online or at some bookstores where this service is available for students. Just remember that rented books have a due date and if you need more time to study, check if the rental service has extensions.
