Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has launched a dehorning programme in Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park

By admin Apr29,2024

In response to a significant increase in rhino poaching incidents, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, in partnership with WWF South Africa, has launched a dehorning programme in Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park. The program, which requires ongoing financial support and collaboration from various stakeholders, aims to protect threatened species populations in the region.

WWF South Africa’s CEO Dr Morné du Plessis said: “A decision to dehorn is never taken lightly and only one of a wide range of interventions which together seek to simultaneously remove the potential reward of rhino poaching while increasing the likelihood of being caught. The province of KZN has played a critical role in rhino conservation in Africa which is why we are committing resources towards supporting the authorities in their efforts to protect rhinos. Beyond the dehorning programme, we will also be supporting Ezemvelo in its broader efforts to implement the Ezemvelo KZN Guardianship Strategy for Rhinoceros.”

Ezemvelo has implemented a dehorning initiative as part of their comprehensive approach to combat poaching, following successful strategies used in Kruger National Park. The organization is dedicated to reducing poaching incidents through various efforts, including increased patrols, surveillance, improvement of fences and ranger living conditions, integrity testing, and now dehorning. This is part of the Ezemvelo KZN Guardianship Strategy for Rhinoceros which aims to significantly reduce poaching.

Recent initiatives to combat rhino poaching include investments in a smart fence, increased field rangers, integrity testing for staff, vehicle trackers, improved community relations, additional helicopter hours with night vision capability, and the appointment of a new Senior Manager for Rhino Protection.
