A young determined woman from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, proved that rejection is not the end but the beginning of greater opportunities. Thandeka Myeza, founder of the fashion brand Malesna Design, had a dream of building her own clothing line. Yet, when banks turned her down for funding, it seemed her vision would remain just that-a dream.
Her breakthrough came when she approached the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA). With a R50,000 grant, Thandeka was able to buy much-needed machinery and fabric to kick-start her operations. That small step of support turned into a giant leap for her career. Today, her brand is recognized for its stylish and proudly South African designs.
Reflecting on her journey, Thandeka says: “If the doors you are knocking on stay closed, don’t give up-find another door. For me, NYDA was that open door, and I will forever be grateful.”
She encourages young people not to underestimate the power of persistence: “Many think success happens overnight, but it takes patience, sleepless nights, and courage. Once you start, every stitch, every sale, takes you closer to your dream.”
Thandeka’s story is a reminder that support structures like NYDA are not just about funding-they are about fueling hope and creating platforms for growth. For every young entrepreneur in South Africa, her journey lights the path: when passion meets opportunity, possibility becomes reality. All it takes is courage to start, determination to keep going, and the belief that your dream is worth chasing.
